Where to celebrate the Lunar New Year in St. Louis

This year, we moved into the Year of the Horse on February 17. Trot on over to one of the city’s many celebrations.

SLAM Social | February 20

Fold some origami, learn tai chi moves, and enjoy an array of cultural performances. An iconic and energetic lion will dance through the sculpture hall, and student dancers will demonstrate steps from China, Tibet, Korea, Vietnam, and Philippines. Philip Hu, Saint Louis Art Museum’s curator of Asian art, will give a brief talk about a 2,000-year-old piece of decorative horse armor from the collection. Free admission, cash bar. 4–8 p.m. Saint Louis Art Museum, One Fine Arts Drive.

Kids can learn about the Lunar New Year at The Magic House’s Chinese New Year event. Lion dances and dragon performances are sure to be a hit with your little foals. Free with museum admission. 10:30 a.m.–noon. The Magic House, 516 S. Kirkwood.

Buder Library | February 21

Kids can learn about many of the different cultures celebrating the Lunar New Year. The crafts, games, and food are great for kids of all ages, from babies to teens. Free. 10:30–11:30 a.m. Buder Library, 4401 Hampton.

The St. Louis Modern Chinese School celebrates the Lunar New Year with its gala, “Spring Sets Sail: Success at Full Gallop.” Music, laughter, and cultural spirit are on deck. Individual tickets start at $15. St. Louis Modern Chinese School, 425 S. Lindbergh.

The St. Louis Vietnamese Community celebrates Lunar New Year. Alongside a traditional ceremony, the event includes games, lucky envelopes, a raffle, music, lucky envelopes, food vendors, a lion dance, and an áo dài contest for kids. 1–4 p.m. St. Mary’s High School, 4701 S. Grand.
