Mayor Cara Spencer backs immigrants amid ICE tensions

By Fox 2 Now

ST. LOUIS – In the wake of widespread protests following two deadly shootings at the hands of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis, St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer is weighing in on the matter.

“Like many of you, I’ve been watching what’s happening across the nation. There are real questions, real fears, and real conversations about who we are as a country,” she said.

Spencer–who is coming on her first year as the 48th mayor–took to social media on Thursday, expressing her gratitude for immigrants in St. Louis.

“They are our friends, our neighbors, our small business owners, and here in St. Louis, we know that diversity is a strength, not a weakness.”

The mayor went on to say that she wants St. Louis’ immigrant community to feel safe. Spencer noted that she and others will offer their support, as well as protection. She also mentioned that support systems in St. Louis are available for those in need of resources.

Spencer’s address to the St. Louis community garnered over thousands of views, with mixed reactions. Some praised the mayor for speaking out, while others called Spencer out for not condeming ICE.

Spencer, however, concluded her speech, saying, “St. Louis is strongest when we lead with empathy, courage, and community. In moments of uncertainty, we choose to stand together.”

“You are welcome here,” Spencer added.
