St. Louis Character: SIUE professor co-founds multicultural soccer club while mentoring young players

A teaching job at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville brought Musonda Kapatamoyo to the St. Louis region, but since arriving in 2007, he has taken on several roles beyond professor.

Beyond his work at SIUE, Kapatamoyo is a Rotary International district governor overseeing 50 clubs, serves on the SIUE Credit Union supervisory committee and has worked on initiatives to improve bicycle and pedestrian access in Edwardsville.

At SIUE, Kapatamoyo is a professor in the department of mass communications, teaching coding, animation, analytics and multimedia courses.

One of Kapatamoyo’s hobbies is soccer. He is a co-founder of 314 Soccer Club, a developmental St. Louis soccer club with a focus on fielding a multicultural team while also providing its players with mentorship opportunities. Founded in 2020, 314 Soccer Club has competed in the United Premier Soccer League and Midwest Premier League.

The 314 Soccer Club relies on sponsorships and donations to cover its expenses. Kapatamoyo said the club aims for about $20,000 annually to cover its expenses, with hopes to raise more to provide scholarships for players to participate in the program. Read more here.
