The International Roots of St. Louis-Based Hůga Bar

Each protein-packed Hůga Bar flavor was developed to tell a story and share an experience. The dulce de leche-oat-walnut bar, for example, is inspired by a recipe for a cake from the Bohemia region of Russia, which co-founder Luisa Mendoza’s grandmother brought with her from Europe to South America. The almond-honey flavor, an homage to Spanish turrón, is the most personal recipe for co-founder Luis Rivero.

“My wife and I took a road trip in Spain, and we were at a friend’s house about two hours north of Madrid, in this beautiful town with maybe 20 houses,” he says. “We’re in their backyard, under a tree, having a delicious Spanish paella for lunch; that lunch lasted forever. At the end, they’re passing around the turrón, and I wondered if we could make a bar that had the same flavor, but it’s nutritious – turrón is very, very sweet; it has a lot of sugar.”
