Please join us for the upcoming “Becoming American” series of documentaries and discussions on immigration. Every second Saturday of the month, from June through December, from 1-4 p.m. the St. Louis Public Library invites you to celebrate the history of immigration in America.
The series, which alternates between our Buder, Carpenter and Schlafly locations, explores a different facet of the immigration experience. Each screening will feature various items of interest including guest speakers, food or music. The first program is on June 8 at Carpenter Library: “My American Girls,” follows hardworking immigrants living frugally in a multi-family house in Brooklyn. Prior to the movie, Jason Simmons will perform Caribbean music on steel drums.

- July 13 @ Carpenter Library – “Welcome to Shelbyville,” takes an in-depth look at discrimination in Shelbyville, a small Tennessee town in the heart of the Bible Belt.
- August 10 @ Buder Library – “Century of Immigration.” Episode Four: “The Power and the People,” of the acclaimed PBS series “New York”, studies the great wave of immigration that began in the late 19th century. Genealogy presentation to follow.
- September 14 @ Schlafly Library – “General Tso” explores the larger story of migration, adaptation and innovation in American popular culture.
- October 12 @ Carpenter Library – “The Nigerians” explores the struggles of the Nwidor family as they make their way as new immigrants in America.
- November 9 @ Schlafly Library –“The Jewish Americans” looks at the large Jewish population that immigrated to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
- December 14 @ Buder Library – “Destination America.” Episode One: “The Golden Door” explores the historical context for America’s longstanding, and sometimes, conflicted relationship with immigrant labor. Make a memory box after the film viewing.
