39 North: The Global AgTech Innovation District

39 North is the global hub for AgTech located in Creve Coeur, and the district partners are working to make it the premier destination for plant science and AgTech companies around the world.  A $500,000 federal planning grant awarded in May 2015 funded the development of the 39 North project.  39 North is a 10-year effort that began in earnest in December 2016 to transform a 600-acre area in Creve Coeur into a new AgTech innovation district. The area is already home to Bayer, the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, the Helix Center BioTech Incubator and BRDG Park, as well as a number of startups and entrepreneur support organizations. The goal is to leverage and build upon the area’s assets by physically connecting the district.

With more than 1,000 plant science PhD’s in the region (the highest concentration in the world), 39 North is rapidly emerging as a world leader in academic and corporate AgTech research and innovation.  Highly-skilled experts contribute to world-class research institutions like the Danforth Center, Missouri Botanical Garden and many local colleges and universities.  The 39 North district is such an exciting and growing area in St. Louis that the Brookings Institution highlighted it as a model for successful cluster initiatives nationwide.  The development of 39 North is led by the St. Louis Partnership, the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, the Cities of Creve Coeur and Olivette, Bayer, and several of the companies operating out of the Helix Center and BRDG Park.

The strategic master plan to develop 39 North is an extension of Dr. William Danforth’s vision to make St. Louis a world center for plant science and innovation.  By connecting regional assets, improving mobility, creating development opportunities and additional greenspace we will enhance our ability to grow, attract and retain companies and top talent.
